Carpet Cleaning Knightsbridge Health and Safety Policy
Carpet Cleaning Knightsbridge is committed to providing professional carpet and upholstery cleaning services in a way that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, visitors and the wider public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety across all work activities and service locations.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We recognise our duty to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and accepted industry best practice. We aim to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning and related services. We commit to maintaining safe working conditions, using suitable equipment and products, and ensuring that all team members understand their responsibilities.
Objectives
To demonstrate our commitment, Carpet Cleaning Knightsbridge has adopted the following health and safety objectives:
To identify and control risks associated with carpet and upholstery cleaning activities.
To provide and maintain safe equipment, tools and cleaning machinery.
To ensure the safe storage, handling and use of cleaning chemicals and solutions.
To provide appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to employees.
To minimise disruption and risk to customers, their families, staff and visitors while work is carried out.
To work towards continual improvement in health and safety performance through regular review.
Responsibilities
Ultimate responsibility for health and safety lies with the company management. Management is responsible for ensuring that adequate resources are available to implement this policy and that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning and decision-making.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of safe working procedures, ensuring that staff follow them and that equipment and materials are used correctly.
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow company procedures, use protective equipment provided, report hazards, accidents and near misses, and cooperate with any investigation or improvement measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out risk assessments for typical carpet and upholstery cleaning tasks and for any non-routine or higher-risk work. These assessments identify hazards such as slips, trips, manual handling, electrical equipment, hot water, moving machinery, chemical exposure and working in occupied premises.
Based on these assessments, we establish safe systems of work and clear instructions for staff. These include site-specific checks before starting work, safe use of hoses and cables to avoid trip hazards, and appropriate control measures when working in homes, offices, commercial units and shared areas.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Carpet Cleaning Knightsbridge uses professional cleaning agents that are appropriate for carpets, rugs, upholstery and hard flooring. We manage these substances in line with recognised good practice for control of substances hazardous to health.
We ensure that all cleaning products are clearly labelled, stored securely and used only for their intended purpose, following manufacturer instructions. Safety information for each product is available to staff, and training is provided on dilution, application, ventilation requirements and emergency actions in case of spills, skin or eye contact, or inhalation.
Where possible, we select low-hazard, environmentally considerate products to reduce risk to people and surfaces.
Equipment Safety
Our carpet cleaning machines, vacuums, extraction units, steam cleaners and associated tools are maintained in a safe condition. Regular checks are carried out on electrical leads, plugs, hoses and fittings to ensure they are free from damage and suitable for continued use.
Equipment is used only by trained personnel and in accordance with operating instructions. Staff are trained to isolate and remove from service any item of equipment that appears faulty or unsafe, and to report it to management for inspection or repair.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Carpet and upholstery cleaning often involves lifting, carrying and moving equipment, furniture and materials. To reduce the risk of strains and injuries, we provide guidance and training on safe manual handling techniques, including correct lifting posture, team lifting where needed and use of trolleys or other aids.
Where possible, we plan work so that heavy equipment does not need to be carried over long distances or up multiple flights of stairs without assistance.
Personal Protective Equipment
Appropriate personal protective equipment is provided where required by risk assessment. This may include protective gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators when necessary, and suitable footwear with good grip.
Employees are instructed on the correct use, care and storage of personal protective equipment, and are required to wear it whenever specified for a task.
Working in Client Premises
We recognise that the majority of our services are carried out in homes, offices and commercial premises that remain occupied during the work. We therefore take particular care to protect customers, staff, visitors and pets from harm.
Before starting work, our operatives carry out a visual inspection to identify potential hazards and discuss any concerns with the client. Cables and hoses are routed to minimise trip risks and, where appropriate, warning signs are placed to highlight wet floors and work areas.
We treat all premises with respect, ensuring that ventilation is adequate, noise is kept to reasonable levels, and that all areas are left clean, tidy and safe at the end of the job.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new staff receive induction training that covers our health and safety policy, emergency procedures, safe use of equipment and chemicals, and expectations for personal conduct. Further task-specific training is provided for specialist equipment and cleaning methods.
Refresher training and toolbox talks are provided periodically to reinforce key safety messages and to introduce updates to procedures or products. Supervisors monitor working practices and provide additional guidance where needed.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Incidents are recorded and investigated to identify underlying causes and to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Staff are briefed on emergency procedures, including what to do in the event of fire, serious spillage, electrical fault or injury while working in client premises. First aid supplies are available and employees know how to summon appropriate assistance when required.
Monitoring and Review
Carpet Cleaning Knightsbridge regularly reviews this Health and Safety Policy to ensure that it remains suitable and effective. Reviews take into account changes in legislation, new equipment or products, feedback from employees and clients, and any learning from incidents or near misses.
We are committed to continuously improving our health and safety performance and to maintaining a culture where safety is an integral part of delivering high-quality carpet and upholstery cleaning services.
